What is Hypnosis?
Hypnosis is a totally natural state of relaxation and concentration at one with a state of heightened awareness’
Hypnosis is a Greek word meaning ‘to sleep’ and was originally coined by the eminent 19th century Scottish surgeon James Braid. However he soon realised that patients were not in fact asleep but merely in a state of total relaxation, but by this time the word had stuck and been widely accepted by society.
What Hypnosis is not, is anything magical or mystical, but purely a state of total relaxation and one that we all enjoy on a daily basis. That delicious feeling when we’re dropping off to sleep, or waking up or even when we’re absorbed in a good book or film. Whilst we’re totally relaxed our senses are heightened and our minds are more open to positive suggestions for our wellbeing. Whether it’s changing negative behaviour patterns and stopping something you no longer want to do, or increasing confidence and being able to do something you’ve always wanted to do!
When using hypnosis for therapeutic benefit, I will gently talk you into a lovely state of relaxation by using pleasant visualisation techniques and progressive muscle relaxation.
Some of my clients report feeling heavy and lethargic whilst others feel light and tingly, but all report a feeling of calmness and total relaxation.
Misconceptions about Hypnosis
Sadly many clients come to me with preconceived ideas of hypnosis being all about mind control having watched stage hypnotists at work. Hypnosis for therapeutic benefit is purely about relaxation and you, the client, remains in control and awake at all times and you cannot be made to do anything against your own will. Hypnosis is merely a tool to aid relaxation and assist the process of therapy and the only thing you would ever be asked to do is talk!
Suggestion Hypnotherapy
Clinical Hypnotherapy, most commonly known as suggestion therapy is a powerful technique combining relaxation, hypnosis and bespoke carefully chosen suggestions depending on your presenting symptom to bring about a positive change within yourself.
Having been induced into a lovely relaxed state of hypnosis your subconscious mind is more open to taking onboard positive suggestions for your wellbeing and chosen outcomes, whether you’re wanting to stop doing something, such as smoking or biting your nails, or maybe you’re needing a confidence boost to attend an interview, fly on holiday or pass your driving test for example.
Each session of suggestion therapy is tailor-made for you and whilst in hypnosis I will deliver positively phrased suggestions combined with visualisations of your desired outcomes. Generally only one or two sessions are required to achieve your goals. After your session you will feel calm, relaxed and with a renewed sense of internal confidence to change those unwanted habits and behaviours that you consulted with.
